[Content warning: Discussions of interpersonal violence]
Since 1989, October has been federally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and unfortunately, rates of domestic violence among college students remain too high with over 30% reporting some form of violence. At the University of Minnesota, the Aurora Center for Advocacy and Education has been working since 1986 to support victim survivors of sexual and relationship violence.
You can get involved in raising awareness through the Aurora Center’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month programming:
- Green Flag Campaign: October 16, 2024, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tabling in front of Northrop, stop by and share what you want to see in a healthy relationship to help shift the culture.
- Wear Purple Day: October 17, 2024, all day. Wear purple to spread awareness about domestic violence.
- Say BOO to Domestic Violence: October 30th 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tabling at Coffman Memorial Union outside of Great Hall. Participate in spooky season-themed activities to learn more about healthy relationships and supporting survivors.
Additionally, October falls within the “Red Zone”—a period from the start of the fall semester to late November when over 50% of college sexual assaults occur. The Red Zone is marked by the high energy of the fall semester and the challenges new and returning students face while adjusting to campus life. Factors like alcohol use, inadequate consent education, numerous social events, and excitement around making new connections can create a high-risk environment. The Aurora Center is committed to addressing these issues through education, awareness, and proactive campus engagement.
The Aurora Center is looking further to innovate and elevate our services, educational programming, and student-centered opportunities. One of Aurora’s developing initiatives aims to revamp their Men and Masculinity engagement and educational curriculum. Aurora needs trailblazers in this community who are willing to take a step forward, be the change, and participate in our Men and Masculinity Focus Groups. The discussions within these groups are where Aurora will draw inspiration and feedback to cultivate a healthier and safer campus community. To sign up to participate in these focus groups visit z.umn.edu/mascfocusgroups or reach out to our Men’s Engagement Coordinator, Michael Chapman ([email protected]) to share feedback and learn more.
